August 16, 2023 Algeria has banned the movie "Barbie," which had been showing at some cinemas in the country for several weeks, Online news outlet 24H Algerie said Algeria’s Ministry of Culture and Arts notified cinemas in Algiers, Oran and Constantine to “immediately” pull the movie. The official source said the film "promotes homosexuality and other Western deviances" and that it "does not comply with Algeria's religious and cultural beliefs." “Barbie” opened in some Algerian cinemas last month. The film’s distributors removed the Hollywood blockbuster from their screening schedules starting this week. The move comes after authorities in Kuwait and Lebanon banned the live-action movie based on the American fashion dolls for allegedly threatening conservative values. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, the movie sends Mattel Inc's (MAT.O) doll on an adventure into the real world. The film has topped $1 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide since its July 21 debut.
